Why Mini-Splits

Ductless Mini-Split Installation Leander TX Homeowners Choose

For the right space, a mini-split outperforms central AC on cost, comfort, and efficiency. Per DOE guidance on ductless mini-splits, well-designed systems can save 30%+ on energy versus traditional central AC for the spaces they serve.

No Ductwork Needed

Perfect for spaces central AC never reached — garages, ADUs, sunrooms, additions. No torn-up walls or attic runs.

True Zoning

Each indoor head runs independently. Cool the office without freezing the bedroom. Heat the garage without warming the rest.

Energy Efficient

Inverter-driven compressors run only as hard as needed. Most ENERGY STAR mini-splits hit SEER 20+ — significantly above central AC averages.

Whisper Quiet

Modern mini-splits run 19–25 dB indoors — quieter than a library. Great for bedrooms, home offices, and nurseries.

The Right Tool

When a Mini-Split Beats Central AC

Mini-splits aren't always the answer. For whole-home cooling on existing ductwork, central AC usually wins on cost. But for these specific situations, a mini-split is genuinely the better choice — and we'll tell you honestly which fits your situation. If you're weighing options, our AC installation page covers central systems too.

~30%
energy savings versus traditional central AC for the spaces they serve, per DOE — primarily because there's no duct loss.

Garage conversions & workshops

Texas garages can hit 110°F in summer. Running ductwork from your central system into the garage usually isn't worth it — code issues, efficiency loss, and capacity problems. A 12K–18K mini-split solves it cleanly.

ADUs, casitas, & guest houses

Detached structures need their own HVAC. One outdoor unit + indoor head is way cheaper than running a central system to a separate building. Permits and condensate routing get handled.

Room additions

Added a sunroom or bedroom and your existing AC can't keep up? Don't oversize a struggling central system — a mini-split for the addition keeps the rest of your home comfortable too.

Bonus rooms over the garage

Common Central Texas problem — bonus rooms over garages get little airflow from central systems and roast in summer. A dedicated mini-split fixes the comfort gap without rebuilding ductwork.

Home offices that run different hours

Why cool the entire house from 8am–5pm just to keep one room comfortable while you work? A mini-split for your office runs only when you're in it — central AC stays at a higher set point.

Sizing & Zoning

Ductless Mini-Split Installation Leander TX Sizing & Zoning

Sizing matters more than brand. An oversized mini-split short-cycles, fails to dehumidify, and shortens its own lifespan. Per ENERGY STAR guidance on ductless heat pumps, proper load calculation is the single biggest factor in long-term performance.

Rough BTU Sizing (Central Texas)

Room SizeTypical BTU
Up to 250 sq ft9,000 (¾ ton)
250–400 sq ft12,000 (1 ton)
400–550 sq ft18,000 (1½ ton)
550–750 sq ft24,000 (2 ton)
750–1,100 sq ft30,000 (2½ ton)

Garage and west-facing rooms typically need +20% capacity. Bonus rooms over garages may need more. We size to your actual conditions, not a chart.

Zone Configuration Options

Single-Zone
1 outdoor + 1 indoor head
1
Multi-Zone
1 outdoor + 2–4 indoor heads
2–4
Whole-Home
1 outdoor + 5–8 indoor heads
5–8

Most homeowners only need 1–2 zones — adding more increases install cost faster than comfort improvement.

Honest Take on Multi-Zone

If you're considering a 5–8 head whole-home mini-split system instead of replacing central AC, the math usually doesn't work in Central Texas. Multi-zone systems cost more upfront, and central AC efficiency has caught up. We'll do the comparison honestly. Mini-splits shine for spot solutions — not always whole-home.

How much does a mini-split install cost?
Single-zone installs typically run in the low-to-mid four figures installed, depending on capacity, brand, and electrical work needed. Multi-zone systems with 3+ heads scale up from there. We won't quote a number without seeing the space — site conditions matter too much for accurate online pricing.
How long does the install take?
Single-zone setups typically take one full day. Multi-zone (3+ heads) usually takes two days. Vacuum pull-down on the line set is the time-sensitive part — skipping or shortcutting it leads to early failures. We don't rush it.
Mitsubishi vs Daikin — which is better?
Honestly, both are excellent. Mitsubishi has a slight edge on cold-climate heat pump performance — not really relevant in Central Texas. Daikin has stronger humidity control modes. Both come with 10–12 year manufacturer warranties when professionally installed. We carry both — pick based on price, look, and feature set, not brand reputation.
Will it heat the room too, or just cool?
Most modern mini-splits are heat pumps — they heat AND cool from the same unit. For Central Texas winters, they handle heat just fine down into the 20s°F. We default to heat-pump models unless you specifically need cooling-only (rare).
Do I need a permit?
Usually yes, especially when the install includes electrical work or affects an ADU. We pull permits when required and handle inspections. If your project is in an HOA, we'll provide the documentation you need for approval.
Should I just buy a mini-split off Amazon and have you install it?
We strongly advise against this. Most off-Amazon mini-splits void their warranty if not installed by an authorized contractor. The big-name brands (Mitsubishi, Daikin) don't sell direct-to-consumer for this exact reason — they need licensed installs to maintain warranty integrity. We'd rather you save money on something we can stand behind than save upfront and lose warranty coverage.
